Look up, Philly! God's still up there...
sooooo…
there was an earthquake (or more accurately a tremor) in Philly today… personally, i was a little frightened… not particularly scared, because i thoroughly believe if it was my time to go, i’d be gone whether by the walls caving in on me, or choking on my bacon egg and cheese (which also hapened to me this morning… go figure). i do find it odd that i was nauseous for the better part of the morning, and that i felt weird all day until the earth moved under my feet, but it is what it is. no conspiracy theories here…
i did watch a coworker lose her grits over the whole thing, but having file cabinets bang and march toward you will do that to a person. i was also berated by my boss because i was trying to save my cell phone and my wallet as i left, but eff that. if i was to become trapped under ANYTHING, inside or outside that wretched building, a connection to the outside world and identifying information was something i found important to have on my person. sue me.
all that to say, i’m finding the reactions i’ve seen around the ol’ interweb quite interesting. some Cali cats are comparing our confusion and fear to that of total imbeciles because we don’t live our lives having earthquake drills every day until we’re 45. yet others are starting to believe that the rapture really did come in May and we’re just the left-behind losers that God dislikes. meh. you’re all a bunch of jokers if you think either way, in my not-so-humble opinion.
the 5.8 earthquake, with an epicenter over Mineral, VA, was felt as far North as Canada and as far West as Colorado (and possibly further) was a rare occasion on our side f the country, and was located just 3.7 miles deep in the Earth’s surface.
the truth of the matter is that things COULD have been worse. just one more tenth of a point on the Richter Scale and buildings could have collapsed on folks. EVERYTHING in Center City Philadelphia is made of marble, granite and glass and can you imagine even one person pinned under any of that? now imagine if that was your friend, your mother, brother or sister… windows DID crack… it truly could have been worse…
it’s not uncommon for earthquakes to happen… no debate there. but when they happen in HIGHLY POPULATED places where they aren’t USUALLY common occurrences, it will shake people to their very cores, to say the least. i don’t care how brave you think you are. if your loved ones were affected (and i have family in VA where the epicenter was that i still haven’t contacted) it is a scary and tragic event.
i personally pray for all those affected, from VA to CO and hope that we can all have an aftershock free life.
in the meanies… here’s somthing to make you smile… no earthquake Happy Hour jokes, or even something closely related to today…
all i can say is… long live Bill Nye…
