America, my heart bleeds for you. The vitriolic and incessant diarrhea of the mouth spewed on website comment sections is enough to show me that things are getting worse. People are out here angry, hurt, sad, and making up random things about others in a lame attempt to justify their ignorance instead of trying to heal.

My issues with misogyny in Hip Hop (and even R&B now, go figure) are well known and something I will be waxing poetic on soon, a piece that will be a labor of love. But this one strikes me because it’s so BLATANTLY a lyric about date rape. In fact, the line itself IS THE EXACT DEFINITION OF DRUG FACILITATED SEXUAL ASSAULT AND DATE RAPE!

At the charter school, I worked in the front office as an Administrative Assistant. I was responsible for each and every one of those 300+ babies, every day of the week. I was a friend, a disciplinarian, a mother a father… some of those kids actually called me Mommy, I never minded and honestly, their parents didn’t either because they knew I was like a mother to their kids when they weren’t at the school. I was looking out for them and I would protect them fiercely.

Gun culture in America is insane. The fact that there are so many Americans who believe that guns solve problems is not only an extremely dangerous mindset, but also both sad and chilling. I live in a city where we routinely have an average of 250 – 300 murders due to gun violence a year. Even days before the school shooting in Newtown, two young men opened fire on a SEPTA train platform a few blocks from my home. The same day of the Connecticut shooting, a man shot his ex girlfriend and then himself inside a casino in Las Vegas and there was a riot at 22nd & Lehigh avenue where a girl was jumped and shots were fired.

Although I knew that there were plenty of White people out there who HATED the fact that Barack Hussein Obama was elected as our 44th President, I don’t think I was fully prepared for the vitriolic soup that would pass for intelligent discourse in America in the months leading UP TO his election, much less after.

I am not a mother, but this pain I can sympathize with no matter that detail. I ache for these parents and extended family because for 48 hours, Trayvon laid as a John Doe in a morgue. For two days, a family wondered and worried and waited. For a moment I strip race from it, and wish I could forever. I hope any reader who happens upon this post never has to feel being sick with worry over where your brother, cousin, or friend might be if unheard from for two whole days at the age of 17. And then to find out they have lain in a MORGUE, unclaimed and cold.

there was an earthquake (or more accurately a tremor) in Philly today… personally, i was a little frightened… not particularly scared, because i thoroughly believe if it was my time to go, i’d be gone whether by the walls caving in on me, or choking on my bacon egg and cheese (which also hapened to me this morning… go figure).

That is, when we are confronted with a Brother who is truly together; self-assured, well-groomed, respectful and motivated to be his best. You come from a long line of very eloquent, passionate, powerful men; I just wish that more of that was being expressed in the world you inhabit.
